Mediation is the process in which multiple parties meet with a neutral party (a mediator) who helps to facilitate communication between the parties in order to resolve the disagreements between them. In many circumstances mediation can resolve an issue without going through hassle and expense of a trial. When trying to resolve an issue through mediation, it helps when the mediator is well versed in, and has a strong knowledge base of the subject matter. When choosing a mediator, it is important to look for one who has knowledge of the specific topic that the mediation is based on. By having a knowledge base of the topic being mediated, a mediator has a better understanding of what the issues may be, and how to better facilitate communication between the parties due to the mediators familiarity of the vocabulary and rules and regulations of the topic.
